Tharu is an Eastern zone Indo-Aryan language, or cluster of languages, spoken by the Tharu people. Not all Tharu speak distinct languages, but the languages of those who do may be divided as follows, Dangaura (Chaudary), Kathoriya, Rana, and Buksa are mutually intelligible apart from their geographic extremes, and are spoken by ca. 1.3 million. It's not clear if they should be considered Central or Eastern Zone, as they span the divide. Sonha is largely intelligible with Dangauru. Chitwania (Nawalparasi) and Kochila are spoken by a quarter million apiece. Kochila is dialectically diverse, but the dialects are only recorded according to the name of the local district. Many ethnic Kochila have adopted Maithili.
