Ila (Chiila) is a language of Zambia. Since nearly all the many languages of Zambia belong to the Bantu family, and in some
cases bear similarity to one another, it is necessary to note carefully the differences between them: those of the Ila group
are connected with the Tonga of Zambia, but are distinguished by a shushing, that is, the prevalence of ch and sh sounds where
the related speeches do not have them. Maho (2009) lists Lundwe (Shukulumbwe) and Sala as distinct languages most closely
related to Ila. Ethnologue reports that Sala is mutually intelligible with Tonga. |
